Demolition of the whole or parts of the complex was regularly proposed after 1945; by Dan Williams, local historian, in 1946, by the Chamber of Trade in 1952, for a \u2018parking ground\u2019 and in 1963. That proposal was followed by a plan to build a modern shopping and market complex within the market outer walls, and with a two-storey glass office block on stilts at the upper level, which was well received by the Town Council and local press, but was not proceeded with, possibly because the developers withdrew.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-625\" title=\"Cardigan Guildhall Plan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cardigan-guildhall-plan-longitudinal.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan Guildhall Plan\" width=\"650\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cardigan-guildhall-plan-longitudinal.jpg 650w, http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cardigan-guildhall-plan-longitudinal-300x114.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Use of the Building \u2013 A Civic Centre in Miniature<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: 13px;\">The text in The Building News (1859) reveals what an extraordinary complex Cardigan was building, this was a civic centre in miniature, far more than the usual hall over a market, which was common at the time.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-626\" title=\"Cardigan Guildhall Street Plan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cardigan-guildhall-market-street-plan.jpg\" alt=\"Cardigan Guildhall Street Plan\" width=\"650\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cardigan-guildhall-market-street-plan.jpg 650w, http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/cardigan-guildhall-market-street-plan-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the ground floor was the Free Grammar School (now <a title=\"Radley Room Cardigan Guildhall\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guildhall-cardigan.co.uk\/venue-hire\/room-for-hire\/\" target=\"_self\">the Radley Room<\/a>, a community meeting room and event venue), together with its book collection, the Divinity Library, (now the Kitchen) &#8211; the schoolmaster was honorary librarian. The school was accessed by the door still to be seen in College Row, opposite the fishing tackle shop, with \u2018Cardigan Grammar School 1858\u2019 etched in the bath stone above.
