This course offers an introduction to creative writing for the non-visual media (radio, audio recording, and podcasting), as well as public recital. It assists participants in developing a keener ear for the appreciation and effective use of the spoken word; of the dramatic force of sound and silence. It explores the boundaries and interrelations of written language, unspoken thought, and verbal expression, of drama and narrative, word and image.
Each session addresses a specific aspect of aural writing, from story-telling sound effects to stream-of-consciousness narration

Salsa lessons with Nick Paine

(no partner required)

Nick will split the evening into three 40 min sessions – The first is for anyone to come along to, even if you have never danced a step in your life.
In fact especially if you have never danced other than when slightly inebriated at a party! This first session will provide a basic understanding of the salsa rhythm and steps moving on to partner work and the essence of salsa which is all about communication between the two partners.

The second session will build on the first, developing some slightly more complex moves and routines using the techniques learned in the first session to get everyone to the point where they can ‘free dance’ and really start to experience the joy of actually being able to dance.

The third session is a little different. ‘Rueda ‘ or The Cuban Wheel was developed by a group of dancers in Havana, Cuba in the 1950s but has deeper origins in Afro-Caribbean and Latin rhythms. The moves are ‘called’ by one person and the dance involves numerous changes of partner and short routines. The great thing about Rueda is that it has the same step patterns as salsa and moves learned in Rueda can be used when free dancing. Rueda is huge fun and great for getting everyone onto the dance floor.

There will also be time between sessions for free dancing and some line-ups or whatever people want to do.
